Living in Spirit
Char Margolis with Victoria St. George
RRP $24.99
Internationally renowned spiritual intuitive, Char Margolis has been stunning people around the world with her amazing intuitive talents for many years. In her latest book she devotes herself to showing us how to connect to the Essence in ourselves - the most constant part of each of us, and our spirit and soul.
'I believe that part of my mission on earth is to give people proof that even after death their loved ones are still with them, so they can know that this life is not all there is, and that we all will continue to live and love for eternity. However, the core of my work goes beyond connecting people with departed loved ones, or even proving that there is life after death. The central part of my mission is to teach people how to develop their own intuition, their own inner wisdom, the innate sense inside of each one of us that is connected to everything, including the spirits of our dearly departed loved ones. But equally important, my goal is to help people become aware of the universal wisdom, goodness, and love that unite everyone and everything. That universal goodness is where we come from when we are born and where we return when we pass over to the other side.' - Char Margolis

The Intimacy of Death & Dying
Claire Leimbach, Trypheyna McShane and Zenith Virago
RRP $26.99

Death often meets us unexpectedly when we are least prepared to face such loss. It is not something we can schedule or control. But not everything about death is sad and scary. There can be moments of intense love, supreme happiness, unexpected kindness, even laughter.
In their uplifting book, Claire, Trypheyna and Zenith combine personal stories with insights and practical suggestions that will help those who are currently dealing with death and dying and inspire others to start thinking about how prepared they are to care for loved ones, to talk to children about death, to deal with death and to honour someone’s life.
Q&A with Claire Leimbach
Q: Why do you think it is that in our society we resist and try to insulate ourselves from death?
A: I don't believe it was always like this. In the past it was quite normal for people to die at home and be laid out there for family, friends and the village to come and pay their last respects. This often led to a wake afterwards where the life was celebrated and remembered.
These days it is not uncommon to find people who have never seen a dead body. With the advent of funeral parlours our involvement with death was taken away, in the same way that home births became taboo. It is to our own detriment that we hand over all responsibility to a stranger to care for our loved ones at the end. The whole process is made a great deal easier if things have been openly discussed before hand.

Why Can't I Look the Way I Want?
Melinda Hutchings
RRP $27.99

It's a question we all ask ourselves from time to time, but mostly it's a light-hearted question. For someone who has anorexia or bulimia, however, it's a question that reflects both their sense of powerlessness and at the same time their determination to look the way they want.
As someone who battled anorexia for three years, Melinda Hutchings knows only too well that dichotomy. But her book is not a depressing read, because Melinda wants to get the message across that you can come out the other side; you can break free of anorexia, bulimia, exercise bulimia or the male eating disorder bigorexia and her book is full of personal stories, including her own, along with lots of helpful checklists, expert advice and practical tips.
Q&A with Melinda Hutchings
Q: Did you discover any common threads amongst people who suffer from eating disorders during your research?
A: Every person I spoke to thought that an eating disorder would be the answers to all their problems. That on some level an eating disorder represented taking control of their life. However, once the eating disorder took hold, it took over their lives and became all consuming. People lost friends, relationships and their existence was one of misery and heartache. It is difficult to draw out common threads because everyone's circumstances are so different. But the one thing that stood out was that the eating disorder is about self destruction, which is why recovery can be such a hard road. The other thing that stood out was that once the people I interviewed had recovered, they had an inbuilt set of coping mechanisms. I know myself, that the coping mechanisms I found through recovery have buoyed me through some tough times, such as when both my parents had cancer. You don't realise how rewarding and amazing life on the other side of recovery can be until you get there, and that's one of the key messages I want to put out there with this book.

Star Parenting
Sherrynne Dalby
RRP $26.99
Why do some babies need lots of physical contact, while others don't enjoy being held tightly? Why do some children go to bed and straight to sleep every night, while others are still wide awake long after you are ready for bed? Why are some kids easygoing and have no problem making friends, while others prefer their own company? Your child's horoscope answers these questions and more. As well as showing possible areas of conflict or difficulty for your child, their horoscope also provides solutions so you can put in place strategies to help overcome problems before or as they arise.
And Sherrynne also has some insights for parents too. She provides a rundown of the strengths and weaknesses and the parenting challenges for each star sign. How you react as a parent will also depend on what sign your child is but knowing the possibilities and potential flashpoints will help you be the best mum or dad possible.
Q&A with Sherrynne Dalby
Q: What type of advice will parents find in Star Parenting?
A: In my book I talk about everything from preferences in food, sleep patterns, toys and games, to ultimate career choices. I explain why children go through the 'terrible twos' and why this time affects different children in different ways. I cover education, arts, sport and most things that are of importance to parents and their children. Most importantly though are the explanations as to why one child in a family likes one thing while another may loathe it. The aim is for the parent to better understand their child and in doing so accept him or her for who they are.

And as an extra special treat this month, here's a beautiful little novel that will enchant and entrance and bewitch:
Heather Rose's The River Wife, rrp $24.99
The River Wife is a simple and subtle story of love. The river wife -- part human, part fish -- has a duty to tend the river, but instead falls in love with a man. The age-old rhythms of her life irrevocably alter as he trespasses further and further into her heart at a time when she questions her birthright. Tender and stunningly beautiful, The River Wife speaks of desire and love, mothers and daughters, kinship and care, sacrifice and wisdom.
Q&A with Heather Rose
Q: This is such a rich and unusual story, where did the idea for it come from?
A: 'As the sun crests the dark line of land, I wake and step from the river and that in itself is what is called magic.'
I wrote those words nine years ago in a little green cloth-bound notebook. I titled the first page The River Wife -- and so began this novel. Like a river it waited through many seasons for me to come and drink from it, and find the story of the river wife.
I write always first in long-hand and later I transcribe onto my computer. But having spent so much time thinking on it, and filling many journals, the actual writing of The River Wife came quite easily. I write by feel. I tug on a piece of string that might be an image or may be just a sentence like the one that starts this book. I see where the string takes me. I discover the plot along the way, as a reader does. Each novel has its own innate sense and knows where it wants to go. My job is to not get in the way.
The character of the river wife was constantly fascinating to me and the stories she told were curious and compelling. I was swept along by her and the story of her love for the man, Wilson James, who comes to the river. I spent much time writing the book at Lake St Clair -- at the southern end of the Cradle Mountain World Heritage area in Tasmania, where the novel is set.
I have stood on the shores of many lakes yet at Lake St Clair there is something that makes my soul sing and my spirit settle. In this quiet state of contemplation, I listened to the words of water and forests. The land spoke of time and beauty, of belonging and loss. Those are the stories in The River Wife. Some people have called it an adult fairy story, others a fable or myth. But to me it's a story as old as time -- of a woman and a mother who gives more than she ever imagined, for love.
