Q&A with Jost Sauer

Q: Our stereotype of users is of street junkies, but is this just the tip of the iceberg?

A: There is no such thing as a stereotypical drug user anymore. Drug experimentation is no longer linked with rebellion and youth it has become a part of mainstream life. I believe we are in the middle of a drug epidemic. It has been estimated that 400 billion dollars a year are spent on recreational drugs, which represents eight percent of all international trade, about the same as tourism and the oil industry.

Q: Why did you turn to Chinese medicine to explain addiction and recovery?

A: By the time I went to college to study Chinese medicine, I was so ashamed and guilty about what I had done I had hidden my past. I had no idea why I had ongoing paranoia, depression and fear and hoped it would all go away one day, but it didn’t. As soon as I studied Chinese medicine everything I was feeling made sense. There was a never a division between body, mind and spirit in Chinese medicine, as we had in the west, so it is a model that can explain and treat the entire range of drug symptoms from the physical to the spiritual. The latter is very important. Many drug users have had other-worldy experiences that are difficult to make sense of from western medical perspectives but Chinese medicine can go into this territory.

I believe it is extremely important to understand where the good and bad drug generated-feelings come from so that you can understand what you are going through after drugs and why, but also so you can work towards recapturing the highs without drugs. Just stopping drugs is not the answer, you have to continue the journey of discovery that they initiated and TCM also offers a path to this goal.
