About the book: The Face Reader

Patrician McCarthyPatrician McCarthy is one of the foremost authorities on Mien Shiang, and the Five Elements, from which the art and science of Mien Shiang is derived. She founded and is president of The Mien Shiang Institute through which she produces numerous workshops and seminars around the country. In addition to managing her institute, she is on the faculties of two top-tier Traditional Chinese Medical Schools: Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Emperor’s College of Oriental Medicine in Los Angeles.

In 2000, Patrician McCarthy’s The Mien Shiang Institute created and developed the country’s first-ever Diagnostic Medical Mien Shiang Certificate Program at Yo San University: a four semester course targeted to students, acupuncturists and medical practitioners. She teaches a modified course to medical students and doctors at New York University and UCLA Medical Schools.

A teacher, lecturer, practitioner, and writer of Mien Shiang with nearly 25 years experience, Patrician McCarthy is a pioneer in her field, having long imported and applied Eastern principles to Western practices, most successfully in the arena of business and marketing. She creatively tailors her workshops and seminars to meet attendees’ specific professional needs. She can transfix any audience, from attorneys to corporate executives, and from medical doctors to kindergarten teachers.

An expert in her content, Patrician McCarthy is versatile in her talent of teaching: to an audience of lawyers she teaches the art of jury selection, witness examination and cross-examination, and how best to plead before specific ‘types’ of judges. To an audience of Fortune 500 executives, she applies Mien Shiang principle to hiring practices and increasing employee satisfaction, productivity and profit. To corporate managers she deftly draws parallels between Mien Shiang’s emphasis on an individual’s ability to balance mind, body, and spirit with a design team’s ability/inability to collaborate in an effective and successful manner. To all her audiences, Patrician McCarthy sends the vibrant message that Mien Shiang is an accessible, practical, and essential diagnostic tool.

McCarthy equally delivers her conviction - that mind, body, and spirit can be harmonised - to the lay-person who wants to learn about Mien Shiang for personal reasons. At workshops and seminars designed for such curious individuals and couples, she addresses topics ranging from dealing with personality conflicts to learning behavior modification to cultivating nourishing interpersonal relationships.

In addition to serving corporations and individuals in group settings, Patrician McCarthy counsels individual clients from across the United States in her private practice in Santa Monica, California.

Dedicated to educating Westerners about Chinese Medicine in general and Mien Shiang in particular, Patrician McCarthy writes frequently about the Taoist arts on her website, mienshiang.com. She is a regular contributor to several other websites, most notably HealingPeople.com and Acupuncture.com.She has been featured in Natural Health Magazine, and New Age Magazine, and is featured in an article in November 2005 Yogi Times Magazine. She contributed a chapter, “The Mien Shiang Marketing Strategy: Reading Faces” to Phil Lempert’s 2002 book, Being the Shopper: the Buyer’s Choice, (Wiley, 2002); this chapter is a frequent hit on Lempert’s popular website, SupermarketGuru.com. In February the Sacramento Bee featured a light-hearted face-reading by Patrician of the two opposing Super Bowl 2006 coaches Bill Cowher and Mike Holmgran.

Patrician looks forward to continuing to apply her Mien Shiang and Taoist Five Element knowledge and teachings to increasingly broader markets. Though her authority is grounded in the wisdom of the past, her vision is on the future - West can meet East.
